No contact with McCain since he went to San Francisco area and I was
mostly in San Diego. We did have Admiral Stockdale who ran for VP with
Ross Perot. My roomate in VF-11 on Forrestal was in the plane that had
its missile accidentally fire into McCain's causing the "Great Fire of
the Forrestal". Our squadron had 44 deaths in the fire since our crew
berthing area was just under the flight deck where the explosions went
off. I joined after the ship was repaired.
One of my jobs at COMNAVAIRPAC was to supervise the SERE training for
aviators at Warner Springs, Ca where we gave us each an opportunity to
experience being "waterboarded". I can testify from experience that it
will make you want to talk and if that was torture, it did not leave any
longlasting effects on most of us. The SERE training did generate an
accident or two and an occasional lawsuit, but not on my watch.
As part of the AIRPAC job, I worked with Chuck Law from USS Pueblo, Doug
Hegdahl an approved early releasee from North Vietnam, Jess McElroy
former POW in Korea and others in training aviators about preparations
for possible life in captivity and with Intel Officers about what we
knew and did not know about captives in North Vietnam. It was in that
job that I wrote the Navy's OP Plan for Operation Homecoming and we had
a meeting in San Diego a year before we knew anything about a Release to
get plans in place for all the logistics of what we would do if they
were all released at once, including Medical, Chaplains, Family
Services, Intelligence, etc.
Sorry. Guess you pushed a button.
